This year's festival will feature work by Sam Bartlett with their crankie, B-A-N-J-O
Sam Bartlett learned to make crankies from watching Bread & Puppet Theater productions as a teenager, growing up in Vermont. For the past 25 years he has played a role in the resurgent interest in this 19th century entertainment form, the moving panorama. Sam has taught crankie making workshops throughout the country, from schools in Homer, AK and Corvalis, OR to summer camps in Plymouth, MA. His crankies have been performed at the Berkely Old-time Music Convention, Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan, and at Lotus World Music Festival. Most recently he was a guest artist for Voces Novae, creating three crankies to the music of Jacques Offenbach, a total of 200 feet of moving artwork.
